After attending countless birthday parties for her children’s friends and shopping for the “perfect gift”, Catherine Zahn realized the gift should be fun and have a meaningful impact on children. That is when her idea of making dolls from recycled products and the concept of Gracie Greene™ was born, along with her company Trashion Dolls.
The dolls are made mostly from newspaper, scouring pads and Tyvek paper from FedEx envelopes. Catherine’s concept is a “green” version of Build-a-Bear Workshop®, encouraging people to dress and decorate their dolls with everyday items.
Gracie Greene™ is a symbol for recycling and is meant to get young people thinking about taking care of the environment, which is the mission of the company.
“When we first started making the dolls, many of the neighborhood children brought us plastic and paper objects that normally would be thrown out but they thought we could use these items to dress Gracie,” stated Catherine. “It was exciting to see how involved the kids were with this concept. The recipients of our dolls can identify other items they find to adorn Gracie.”
Catherine makes all the dolls herself. Once the fabric has been selected for the doll’s body, that color palette and design will often dictate the personality of the doll and help her dress the doll accordingly. She currently has 25 unique Gracie Green™ Dolls available online, including a wedding doll for eco-conscious brides.
Clients can even request that a certain type of doll be custom made. These personalized dolls make great gifts for people who are difficult to buy for. Each doll is signed and dated so she truly is a work of art.
Every doll is placed inside one of Nashville Wraps’ reusable bags, decorated with recycled kraft tissue paper. Also included in the bag is a decorating kit, packed in one of Nashville Wraps’ Sinamay organza mesh bags (at left).
Raising compassionate children is Catherine’s goal, and the awareness her dolls bring is helping to do just that. For every Gracie Greene™ doll purchased, 10% is donated to the education-based organizations, American Assistance for Cambodia and Girls be Ambitious in Cambodia. Catherine strongly feels that educating girls is the single most effective way to fight poverty and abolish modern-day slavery.
